Attempts at Setting (After A Birthday Party)

•September 2, 2008 • 4 Comments

Even though we had topics to chose from, I really wanted to write about after a birthday party since my brother is having one soon and I wanted to try and figure out how it would look after.

It was a disaster. The room looked as if a nuclear bomb had gone off. You could still smell the blown out candles and the sticky frosting stuck in the kid’s hair. I was not looking forward to this clean up. The rectangular area of chaos was so overwhelming with streamers, popped balloons, plates, cups, confetti and paper goods that struggled to keep its original structure while dissolving under the ruins of wrapping paper. The baby elephants were all playing outside in the booming fall sunshine, protecting them from the evil in the world, letting them play innocently on the swings and sand box. As I looked around I decided to start with what I assumed were the couches. I tore off ribbons and undefined objects that contained sparkles, polka dots, hearts and googley eyes. I was guessing those materials were for the tricky arts and crafts project that only kept the young ones entertained for a short amount of time. The furniture was absorbing the childish songs, swelling with every beat. After i removed the party crafts into the trash bag, I could finally see the olive green couch sticking out in the colorful room. It was the only thing clean compared to everything else. The bright colors of the childish years lurred me into a dream of candy land. I never knew that a five year olds birthday could effect me so much.

Best SciFi Movies

Some say that books are better than the movies. I say that the movies are better than the books. For me at least, watching a movie helps me register what’s going on better. Since I’m a visual learner, the material is processed better . Also, watching a science fiction movie is incredibly exhilerating and suspenseful. My favorite science fiction movie would have to be War of The Worlds. The reason i enjoy watching it so much is because of how thrilling it is. The effects are incredible, almost so good that you feel as though it’s real. Your brain is spinning with supsension and creatures popping out. Sometimes you feel as though maybe this could really happen and what would happen if it did. I think that science fiction gives you those questions a lot to think about and that is why so many people are drawn to this genre because it’s almost a “what-if” excitment.

Best SciFi Books

I haven’t exactly read that many science fiction books. However, i have read books that are along those lines of fantasy and futuristic means. I am reading the twilight series that incorporate the love between a human and a vampire and the struggles they go through to stay together. It may sound silly but it is empowering and i cannot put it down no matter how hard i try. Sometimes i even read it in the bathtub. I have read The Giver in 7th grade and continued to the trilogy of The Messenger and Gathering Blue. I thought that Gathering Blue was extremely depressing and couldn’t really get a grasp of where the book was going. It had a slow pace and seemed to drag on with detail that lead to no where. I thought that The Giver was the best book out of the three since it had the most interesting concepts. It made you wonder what a world like that would really be like. What would you do if you had to live in that society. It almost takes you to a completely different world for twenty minutes and allows your mind to let loose of the reality our world faces. To say the least, I think that Twilight was my favorite scifi book that i have read so far. Hopefully i will read more interesting stories and novels in the captivating genre.

Why Science Fiction?

One, day my sister and I were watching the movie War of the Worlds. At first we were only watching it because of Tom Cruise and his hunkish looks. However, as we kept watching it we realized that the effects and concepts of the movie were exceptional. I found the movie fascinating and watched it over and over again recieving a thrill from the supsension and creatures that were tied in. I realized that I was watching what was called a Science-Fiction movie and I thought to myself, “Oh boy, I’m going to turn into a nerd that watches and reads everything scifi.” Because I was intrigued with the fascinating genre from that moment on. I watched the Day After Tomorrow, Cloverfield, E.T., Planet of the Apes, and more. I started to read The Giver and the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer that put me in a world of love and vampires. This summer I couldn’t take my nose out of Twilight and New Moon, the first two books of the series and was eager for more. After my discovery of this incredible style it was time to choose our classes for next year. My english teacher read out the choices for next years english credits and one of them was Science Fiction. I was ecstatic and decided to sign up for Science Fiction Honors, (i needed an honors class to look good on applications) so i thought that would be the perfect class to raise my focus and learning since it was something i really enjoyed so it wouldnt be a pain. So here I am writing in our first blog on the second day of school.                                                                                     manadaboo8
